About BOTOX Cosmetic

What is Botox Cosmetic?

Botox Cosmetic is an injectable treatment derived from a purified protein. It is manufactured under strict quality control standards and is administered in extremely dilute dosages by licensed medical professionals. It is interesting to note that the first use of Botox was in for treatment of lazy-eye in children by a pediatric-opthomologist in BC. Her husband, a dermatologist, adapted Botox for cosmetic use in his practise.

How is Botox Cosmetic used?

A tiny amount of Botox Cosmetic is injected into the muscle that creates the dynamic wrinkle. When Botox Cosmetic is injected into a muscle, it blocks the nerve impulse from reaching that area, and as a result, the muscle relaxes. As the muscle relaxes, the dynamic wrinkle overlying the muscle is smoothed away.

Will Botox Cosmetic give me a fake, frozen look?

Not if you are treated by an experienced doctor who will be able to determine the right dose and injection technique for you. The treatment only relaxes the muscle beneath the frown line at the injection site, so the other elements of facial expression remain active. It also has no effect on the sensory nerves, so you will have normal feeling in the treated areas.

How long do the effects of Botox Cosmetic treatment last?

The effects of a Botox Cosmetic treatment usually last three to four months, at which time another injection is required. After several treatments, the effects of Botox Cosmetic may begin to last longer.

Are Botox Cosmetic treatments safe?

Yes! Botox has been licensed in Canada since 1990 as a safe and effective treatment. In 2001, Health Canada approved Botox Cosmetic for wrinkle therapy and it is proven to be very safe through extensive research and testing. In the amounts used for wrinkle therapy, the most common side effects, such as bruising, are temporary and localized to the area of injection.

Is this treatment for everyone?

There are very few restrictions regarding Botox Cosmetic treatments. Clients who are pregnant or nursing, or have neurological disease should not be treated.

What can I expect on the day of my treatment?

A tiny amount of Botox Cosmetic is injected, very precisely, into the muscles being treated. Because the needle is so fine and only a small amount of liquid is used, the pain associated with these injections is minimal to none. No sedation or local anesthetic is required, and you can resume normal activities immediately. Some clients experience a slight temporary bruising at the injection site.

What are Teosyal and Juvederm?

Winner of the Aesthetic Medicine Awards -2008 "Best Injectable Filler"!

Teosyal is safe and natural cosmetic dermal filler that restores volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds - the vertical lines from your nose to your mouth. The dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance that already exists in the human body.

Dr. Wang chooses Teosyal and Juvederm over the other available fillers because of the long lasting results, less initial swell and downtime and above all smooth natural results.

What areas can be treated?

  • Forehead - ease the horizontal lines and wrinkles across your forehead, as well as the vertical lines between your eyebrows.
  • Eyes - Smooth away the fine, superficial lines in your eye area.
  • Cheeks - Creates a rounder, more sensuous facial contour or reduces hollowness in the cheeks.
  • Mouth and Lips - Minimize the vertical smile lines between your nose and mouth. You can also add plumpness to your lips - sculpting the lip line with precision
  • Chin and Jawline - Create a slightly fuller shape for the chin. Just a small amount of additional volume can make a difference

How long does it last?

Effects generally last for about twelve months. It disappears so slowly that you have ample time to maintain your appearance with follow-up treatments. Long-lasting effects are not permanent, therefore you have the flexibility to keep the same look, or make adjustments over time.

Do injections hurt?

The filler injected into the skin in tiny amounts using an ultrafine needle. To optimize your comfort level during the short procedure, Dr. Wang can freeze the treatment area prior to injecting or use product that already contains lidocaine.

Can filler replace surgical procedures?

No, although filler is sometimes used in conjunction with surgery in order to fill out wrinkles that cannot be removed by surgery.

Can the procuct be removed?

No. However, Teosyal and Juvederm dissolve naturally with time. If you feel uncertain about the desired result, you can choose to have the treatment done in steps on different occasions. If you feel that there is too much product in any one area, Hyaluronidase can be injected to reduce the volume of the product.

Are there any side effects?

The most common side effects are inflammatory reactions such as redness which may be associated with stinging or pain on pressure at the injection site. These reactions may last for a week. Swellings or nodules may develop at the injection site.

Dr. Wang is pleased to discuss your questions with you as you evaluate whether Botox and Filler are right for you.

Medical Peels

What is chemical exfoliation and how does it benefit my skin?

Chemical exfoliation is the process of applying a customized concentration of solution to your skin.  Major considerations are skin type and condition, heredity, age, hormones, health and lifestyle.  The doctor/nurse will determine which treatment is best for you based on these factors.  You may experience a tingling sensation, slight stinging, or mild redness that may last for several minutes. The immediate result is the softer feel of your skin. A series of chemical exfoliation procedures, performed over weeks or months, along with a daily skin care regimen, sloughs away the top layer of dead skin cells to reveal fresher, healthier skin.

What kind of improvement can I expect with a chemical exfoliation treatment?

Improvements will vary from client to client. In general, you will notice improvements in:

  • - fine lines - irregular skin texture
  • - acneic skin - dehydrated skin
  • - sluggish skin - uneven skin tone
  • - photo damage - rosacea
  • - congested skin

How soon will I notice results? How often do I need to come?

You will feel an improvement in the softness of your skin in as little as 1 week. As the treatment progresses, you will notice a difference in the overall appearance if your skin. The frequency of visits will be determined by Dr. Wang and/or the nurse. Keep in mind that it will take several treatments before you see the optimal skin rejuvenation benefits.

Who is a candidate for a chemical exfoliation treatment?

Only a doctor can answer that question. During your initial consultation your medical history will be reviewed. It is essential to let your doctor know if you have experienced any of the following: active herpes simplex (cold sores), psoriasis, eczema, rosacea, recent surgeries, a bad sunburn, hypertrophic or keloidal scarring or used Accutane.
